Subject: taiwan rejects torch relay ...
Post Date: 04/27/07
THE CHAIRMAN OF TAIWAN'S OLYMPIC COMMITTEE HAS REJECTED
BEIJING'S OFFER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY.
THE STATEMENT CAME LESS THAN TWO HOURS AFTER I-O-C OFFICIALS
SAID THAT CHINA HAD MAPPED OUT WHAT WAS TO BE THE LONGEST
EVER PRE-GAMES TORCH RELAY.
ACCORDING TO ... CAI CHEN-WEI .. THE DECISION NOT TO
PARTICIPATE IN THE RELAY WAS DUE TO BEIJING'S INSISTENCE ON
DOWNGRADING TAIWAN'S SOVEREIGNTY .. AND CATEGORIZING THE
TAIWAN TORCH RELAY LEG AS PART OF THE "DOMESTIC ROUTE."
SPEAKING TO REPORTERS ... CAI SAID .. THAT THE DECISION BY
BEIJING IS SOMETHING THAT THE GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE OF
TAIWAN COULD NEVER ACCEPT.
CAI'S COMMENTS CONTRADICTE AN APRIL 13-TH STATEMENT BY
ANOTHER TAIWANESE OLYMPIC OFFICIAL .... WHO SAID THE ISLAND
COULD ACCEPT A SPOT ON THE TORCH ROUTE THAT INVOLVED
GEOGRAPHICAL CONTIGUITY WITH HONG KONG.
HOWEVER ... IN RECENT WEEKS LAWMAKERS FROM THE RULING D-P-P
HAVE SAID THAT A ROUTE THAT LINKED TAIWAN AND HONG KONG
WOULD NOT BE ACCEPTABLE BECAUSE IT WOULD FEED INTO CHINA'S
DESIRE TO MAKE IT APPEAR THAT THE SELF-GOVERNING ISLAND WAS
PART OF CHINA.
